Welcome to Maths at Belle Vue Girls' Academy

Maths is taught at all levels in school. All pupils at key stage 3 and 4 take mathematics as it is a core curriculum subject.

As a department we believe in enabling and enthusing pupils to study maths by a combination of traditional teaching and interactive methods so that a clear understanding can be achieved. “Mathswatch" and "Mymaths” websites are a key interactive learning tools that pupils will use in school and may use at home. Pupils have their own individual login and passwords.

Members of staff are always available to give extra support to students before and after the normal school day.

Key Stage 3

In years 7 and 8 pupils follow the secondary mathematics framework. Pupils are set into three tiers – foundation, core and extension depending on Key Stage 2 assessments and an initial assessment with us.

Year 9 start the GCSE 9-1 curriculum.

Key Stage 4

All pupils follow the EDEXCEL linear specification. Students are prepared for the exam through a variety of teaching and learning methods.

Students who are not entered for the GCSE take the Certificate of Achievement so that they will leave with a Maths qualification.

On Mondays, year 11 have a period 6 lesson to strengthen their mathematical skills. Students are able to resit the GCSE in the sixth form.

Key Stage 5

Students follow the EDEXCEL course. We normally run two teaching groups in Year 12, which demonstrates the enthusiasm that students have to further their education in maths.

In Year 12 pupils study three modules:-
Core 1 and Core 2 enable pupils to develop their algebra and trigonometry skills whilst introducing differentiation and integration.

Statistics 1 applied unit is a progression from the GCSE units of handling data.

Each module is examined by a 1hour 30 minute paper which is taken at the end of Year 12.

In Year 13 students again follow three modules:-
Core 3 and Core 4 are a progression of Core 1 and Core 2.

The applied modules of Statistics 2 or Mechanics 1 complete the A2 course. Students choose the best applied unit following a sample lesson of both.
Again each module is examined by a 1hour 30 minute paper.

AS and A level Maths are suitable to take with any combination of subjects. They complement the sciences but work equally well as stand-alone subjects.

Further Maths

Students may also follow the AS Further Maths course if recommended by their teacher.

This is a two year course made of 3 units.

Years 12 and 13 may come to the regular Tuesday period 6 to develop their mathematical skills.
