From September 2015 Y13 will follow the AQA A Level (Specification B) in English Literature.

From September 2015 Y12 will follow the Edexcel AS/A Level in English Literature or English Language.

All AS and A Level students will be expected to read widely and show a thirst for learning.  They will study texts across a variety of genres and will have to display a range of skills such as reading for meaning, close analysis of language, form and structure and the ability to compare different texts.  Students are expected to work in groups and on their own, showing a desire to explore genres, themes, ideas and literary figures and movements.  They will be asked to think about how language works in different contexts, how different interpretations can be reached and how critics can help to develop their own responses.  From 2015, all AS qualifications in English are 100% exam; from 2016, all A Levels will be 80% exam.  This means that students have to be committed to the subject, working for 5 hours every week outside of lessons.  Studying English at A Level can be exciting and challenging, but it requires high levels of engagement, organisation and enthusiasm.  Your teachers will give you structure and support, but you have to be willing to get involved, share opinions and express yourself.  Meeting deadlines, doing preparatory reading and research will help you to feel confident.  Look at the reading list in the ‘Widening Your Horizons’ booklet for wider reading suggestions.  There are links at the bottom of the page to a range of websites which you may find interesting.

The Russell Group has described English Literature as a ‘facilitating subject’ - a subject that will give you more options when applying to university.  Please see the attached report for further information.

Accelerated Reader Programme

In Key Stage Three you will take part in the Accelerated Reader programme. This is designed to improve your reading skills and widen your reading horizons. In September, your teacher will ask you to complete a STAR reading test which will tell us what your current reading level is. This information will then be used to guide you towards reading suitable books for your level. After reading each book you will take a quiz online which will show you and your teacher how well you have understood what you have read. You will re-do the STAR test later in the year to check the progress you have made.

At BVGS students and staff love to read and always make sure they have a reading book with them every day. To help yourself, you must read regularly and bring a suitable reading book to school every day. Remember to visit the library and change your book regularly. Mrs Logan and Mrs Marshall will be there to help you if you are unsure about what to choose.

Look out for your teachers’ favourite books displayed on their classroom doors and ask them about what they are currently reading.

We hope you will love reading at BVG!

Over the summer holidays, students in Year 7 and Year 8 will be taking part in the Accelerated Reader Project. Students can choose their project from a suggested list in the blue booklet given to them by their English teacher this week. The booklet also has a competition, reading activities and a reading log, so students are able to record all their summer reading!

Year 7 and Year 8: Don’t forget to bring your completed project and booklet with you to your new English class in September!
