Remembering Lynette Kirk; past Chair of Governors

Lynette was a member of the governing body for over 20 years and the last 8 as chair of the governors. She was honoured in 2007 when she won the award for England’s national governor of the year at the glittering Teaching Awards ceremony.  She was one of the successful 149 finalists in 11 categories from more than 6,000 entries nationwide.

Ms Kirk was instrumental in a number of major projects including the planning of the £2.2 million sports centre named after the 13-year-old girl who died of an undiagnosed heart condition after collapsing at Belle Vue School.

Ms Kirk was also heavily involved in cementing relationships between Belle Vue Girls' and the Chang Zheng middle school in Shanghai. Her daughter, Alison Waller, a former Nab Wood School pupil, was a language teaching assistant at the Shanghai school while also studying at South East China University.

Ms Kirk visited her daughter in 2006 and established links between Belle Vue and Chang Zheng.Since then a delegation from the Bradford school has flown over to meet their Chinese counterparts which led to 12 students from Belle Vue Girls visiting China in 2009. She also helped us in the work of conversion to Academy status and so much more behind the scenes.

Ms Kirk’s commitment as a governor and friend of the school will be deeply missed by the whole school community.

Governors

Schools are run by a governing body working with the headteacher and senior management team to ensure pupils get a good education.

What do Governors do?

Together with the headteacher they are responsible for making sure our schools provide good quality education.

They provide challenge and support to headteachers, drawing on their knowledge and experience.

They make decisions together on matters such as performance, targets, school policies and school development plans.

They monitor the impact of policies and oversee school budgets and staffing.

They report on school achievements and respond to inspection recommendations.

They hear appeals from pupils and staff and consider complaints.

They ask searching questions and respect the position of headteachers as professional leaders of schools.

The Governors have many duties, including oversight of the curriculum, school finance, buildings and personnel.  The bulk of their work is done through several committees which meet regularly.  Full Governing Body meetings take place six times per year.

The finance and general accounts committee meets regularly to oversee the general funding of the school and also make important year end and forward planning decisions and statements.
