Welcome to ICT

Information Communication Technology is at the heart of so many jobs in the world that we give all students from Year 7 upwards a wide experience of important computer application software.

The aims of the ICT Department are to:

  • enable students to enjoy using ICT

  • develop understanding so that the students engage with different applications with confidence and a sense of achievement

  • develop practical skills in the use of ICT and the ability to apply these skills to everyday life and the world of work

  • understand the limitations of ICT and the responsibility that goes with its use.

Currently, our facilities include three dedicated ICT suites as well as four other suites which are used jointly with other faculties.  Each suite is fitted with up to 30 personal computers and interactive whiteboard.

Key Stage 3

In Key Stage 3, we have started to adapt our curriculum to take in aspects of the new National Curriculum for Computing.  This places more emphasis on programming and having an understanding of how technologies work.

Key Stage 4

Cambridge Nationals ICT (All students)

All students study ICT until the end of year 11, undertaking the Cambridge Nationals ICT course.  ICT skills are essential for success in employment and higher education, and are among the fundamental transferable skills required by employers. Cambridge Nationals deliver these skills across the whole range of learning styles and abilities, effectively engaging and inspiring all students to achieve great things.

Units include:

  • Understanding computer systems

  • Using ICT to create business solutions

  • Handling data

  • Creating an interactive product using multimedia components

  • Creating dynamic products using sound and vision

GCSE Computing (Optional)

This course gives students a real, in-depth understanding of how computer technology works. The course will give them an insight into what goes on ‘behind the scenes’, including computer programming, which many students find absorbing.

Students will develop critical thinking, analysis and problem-solving skills, which can be transferred to further learning and everyday life.

Key Stage 5

In the sixth form, students have the option of studying Cambridge Technicals in IT.  This is a vocational IT qualification that attracts UCAS points for entry into higher education and is a very popular choice amongst our students.

IT has an ever-increasing role to play in everyday life, at home, at work and in our leisure time. The level 3 Cambridge Technicals in IT encapsulate this through a wide range of units, such as installing hardware, creating a website, identifying an IT fault, computer animation, e-commerce and more. There are practical activities in all units.
